The National Bank of Greece entrusted Leoussis_a with the creation of its Annual Report — a large-scale publication of approximately 700 pages containing financial data, strategic information, operational updates and corporate communication.
The objective was to create a publication that would not only reflect the credibility and institutional strength of the Bank, but also significantly improve the overall reading experience of an otherwise dense and highly technical document.
Besides designing, the request involved a significant technical aspect, the creation of an automated workflow system that processed and parametrized large volumes of data directly from NBG.
The Challenge
Annual reports are inherently complex publications:
information-heavy
data-driven
lengthy
and often visually exhausting for the reader
The challenge was to design a system capable of organizing vast amounts of information in a clear, elegant and accessible way, while strictly adhering to the visual identity guidelines of the National Bank of Greece.
The publication needed to feel:
structured yet light
institutional yet contemporary
comprehensive yet easy to navigate
The Insight
Readability is not only functional — it is also emotional.
The way information is organized directly affects how approachable, trustworthy and understandable it feels to the reader.
For a publication of this scale, design needed to work silently in the background, guiding the reader naturally through hundreds of pages without visual fatigue.
Beyond Design
In addition to the editorial and visual design of the publication, the project also involved a significant technical and systems-design component.
Leoussis_a developed a custom workflow system capable of receiving and processing large volumes of data directly from the National Bank of Greece. The system automatically parameterized and structured this information so it could seamlessly flow into third-party design software with clean formatting and organized hierarchy.
This process significantly optimized the production workflow of such a large-scale publication, reducing manual handling, minimizing formatting errors and ensuring consistency across hundreds of pages containing complex financial and operational data.
By combining design thinking with technical implementation, we created a smarter and more efficient publishing ecosystem that supported both accuracy and readability throughout the entire Annual Report production process.
The Approach
Designing for Readability
We developed a clear typographic hierarchy using different font styles, weights and structures to distinguish:
• chapters
• subsections
• financial information
• commentary
• and supporting content
This created a smoother reading flow and allowed users to instantly recognize the type and importance of information on each page.
Creating Breathing Space
A major design priority was the strategic use of white space.
Generous margins, carefully balanced layouts and clean page structures helped reduce visual density and made the report significantly easier to read and navigate despite its scale.
Purposeful Imagery
All imagery throughout the report was carefully selected and art-directed to reflect the content and tone of each section.
Rather than functioning decoratively, visuals were used to:
Rather than functioning decoratively, visuals were used to:
reinforce narratives
humanize information
and support the overall rhythm of the publication
Respecting the Brand System
Throughout the project, strict consistency with the National Bank of Greece’s visual identity guidelines was maintained, ensuring a cohesive and institutionally aligned result across the entire publication.
The Result
The final Annual Report combined clarity, structure and visual elegance within a highly demanding editorial project.
Through thoughtful typography, disciplined layout systems and carefully curated imagery, Leoussis_a transformed a dense corporate document into a more accessible, reader-friendly and visually refined publication experience.
